Birthday Cake Ideas – Adventure Time theme! Adventure Time is a quirky, animated kids show created for Cartoon Network. It features main characters Finn (a human boy) and his best friend (and adoptive brother) Jake (who is a dog) and a host of other crazy characters. It’s one of those kids shows I don’t mind watching myself – it’s very funny and a bit different. So I was really excited when asked to come up with some birthday cake ideas inspired by the Adventure Time characters. The customer wanted Jake the dog to be the main cake. To start, I covered the cake board in green fondant icing. Jake was created by hand carving into 3 layers of butter cake, covered with buttercream icing and finished in yellow fondant. Fondant is like an edible playdough. It is made from sugar and can be moulded into almost any shaped. Fondant creates a perfectly smooth surface to work, can be coloured into any shade and is one of the most versatile ingredients to work with and for all of these reasons, is my preferred medium create with. When the cake was covered it kind of looked like an egg or a beehive! Once the base was finished it was time to decorate. I finished Jake’s face and arms and then I started to add some characters. The first is Princess Bubblegum. She is made entirely by fondant and is fully edible: Then the Ice King character was next. He took the longest time to create out of all the characters as his beard and teeth were so fiddly as was the...

3 Princess Cake Designs…for the little girl who loves all things princess by Robyn Bent What little girl doesn’t love a princess cake? A princess themed cake is one of the most requested for little girls and you can see why when you take a look at the options available.. Step inside the magical world of the princess cake….. One of the very first cakes I ever made for a paying customer was a gorgeous princess castle cake. Today, the castle cake is still a popular design – I have even made them for some ‘not-so-young’ princesses! With edible turrets, tiny handmade flowers, hand painted vines and chocolate fondant castle doors, your little girl will be thrilled with all of the edible details. This castle cake is finished in fondant icing and dusted with edible glitter for that finishing princess sparkle. Castle cakes can be customized to any colour – pink, purple or another favourite colour. Larger cakes with a second tier can also be created to accommodate extra servings for a bigger celebration. No princess is complete without a tiara………an edible tiara! This fondant finished, 2 tier cake comes complete with an edible, handmade tiara that has been dusted in silver to add extra sparkle. The top tier of the cake has a classic quilted effect, while the bottom tier features candy pink fondant stripes. Matching princess cupcakes You can even add some matching cupcakes to your cake. These crown cupcakes are finished in buttercream icing and topped with pink and silver fondant crowns: Barbie Doll Princess Cake The last of our princess cake designs is the classic...

Hootabelle Cake – 3D kid’s birthday cake This 3D Hootabelle Cake was made for a 2nd birthday. In case you are not familiar Hootabelle is a character from the popular ABC4Kids show Giggle and Hoot. Here is how the Hootabelle cake started out. Layers of butter cake were stacked together and supported by a dowel in the middle to create stability: Next the cake layers were carved into shaped (mmmm I wonder what happened to all those cake scraps?): This is the finished cake carved before the buttercream: The next step is to ice the cake in a creamy layer of delicious buttercream…yum! We only use REAL New Zealand butter in our buttercream – you will taste the difference! The buttercream is smoothed over and then it’s time for the fondant. Fondant is a type of sugar dough which can be moulded into any shape and coloured. It is a great medium to use and makes the cake surface super smooth. I am really pleased how the cake turned out – what do you think? Side view: The Hootabelle Cake was placed on a bright blue cake board with the birthday girl’s name written in fondant letters: Here at Dreamy Cakes we specialise in making children’s cakes – we can also make cupcakes to match your cake and party theme.
