3 Ideas for 1st Birthday Cakes perfect for Girls or Boys

A first birthday is a very special time!  Whether you are planning a huge party for family and friends or a smaller celebration with immediate family you are going to want a special 1st birthday cake to mark this milestone in your child’s life. Here are 3 ideas to help you select the perfect 1st birthday celebration cake for your little boy or girl. 1. Giant Number 1 Shaped Cake – it’s a first birthday so why not mark the event with a number 1 cake?  These shaped cakes are a popular choice for parents – they look spectacular as the party centerpiece and they can be decorated in ANY theme.  You can add a special sugar character that your child loves – a teddy bear, fairy, TV character or even a little miniature sugar version of your child. Here are a couple of recent number 1 cakes: 2. Animal Cakes – if your having a tough time deciding on a theme for the party you can’t go wrong with animals!  Whether it be a farm cake, jungle cake, pony or dinosaur theme, your cake will be memorable and fun.  The brighter the better for a 1st birthday cake! Here are some examples of some animal cakes: 3.  Storybook Cakes – do you have a special book that your child loves to hear you read?  Then a book or story themed cake could be the perfect choice for you.  How about ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’, ‘Where’s the Green Sheep’ or even ‘Cinderella’, a must for all aspiring princesses…..here’s a couple of cake design ideas: If you are still searching for...
How to Avoid a 1st Birthday Meltdown (for you and your child)

How to Avoid a 1st Birthday Meltdown (for you and your child)

Your gorgeous little one is about to turn 1 and it’s time to celebrate!  But how can you have a wonderful and memorable celebration and avoid a 1st birthday meltdown? Here’s a couple of tips which helped me to plan my little guy’s special day: The time of the party.  What time are you planning to schedule the party?  Try to plan around YOUR child (not the guests)!  If your child has (and needs) a long sleep around lunchtime you may find it better to schedule the party earlier in the day.  Try to pick a time when you child is well rested and alert so they can enjoy some of the celebrations. Plan age appropriate activities.  Scary clowns, loud music, noisy activities all can frighten small babies.  Instead of the traditional noisy party games, plan some low key things that your baby will enjoy – quieter singing and clapping to familiar nursery rhymes will keep your baby happy and smiling for the camera. Take some of the pressure off – there is no shame in having the food catered for, or ordering a special cake.  You’ll be glad you did when you have plenty of time to spend with your child on the day instead of worrying about the food or entertainment. Keep it short.  Try to have a starting time and ending time on the invites so people know when it’s time to ‘hit the road’.  I would suggest 1.5 – 2 hours maximum.  This is enough time for baby to see their relatives and friends and enjoy some of the activity without it becoming overwhelming. Take...
1st Birthday Cake Minnie Mouse

1st Birthday Cake Minnie Mouse

Today’s cake is a 3 tier Minnie Mouse themed cake created as a 1st birthday cake. Minnie Mouse is a popular character cake –  I have created them for 1 year old’s as well as 16 year old’s!! It is a bright design that you can easily match party ware with.  Simply go for red and black plates and napkins, balloons and streamers and you have a coordinated party look. Design Variations: This Minnie Mouse cake design can also be made in pink and black and can be created in a 1,2,3 or 4+ tiered cake to cater for the number of guests at your celebration. Cakes in my Kitchen – Behind the Scenes!

Cakes in my Kitchen – Behind the Scenes!

Here’s a little sneak peak behind the scenes here at Dreamy Cakes…….a typical week in my kitchen…. Lots of delicious butter and mud cakes come out of my kitchen oven each week in a variety of flavours.  Our most popular flavours are chocolate, vanilla and butterscotch. Can’t beat the smell of cakes baking! Fondant covered and buttercream covered cakes in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Fondant can be coloured virtually any colour. Make the sugarpaste pieces – these are usually made ahead of time to allow drying.  This week we’ve got lots of differents pieces including sugar people, owls, flowers, wired stars and a sugar race car. Sugarpaste is a type of edible dough that dries firm and can be moulded into any shape. Decorate – my favourite part is standing back and looking at the finished product! Box ’em up – all boxed and ready for parties. Dreamy Cakes can make lots of different cake designs – whatever your theme we can create it for you.  Give us a call 0405 136 562 or email...
