Birthday Cakes – What is Fondant Icing? We answer your questions

Birthday Cakes – your questions answered: What is Fondant? Birthday Cakes can be created using many different types of ingredients.  In this post we answer all of your questions about FONDANT icing. What is Fondant? Fondant is a type of icing used to finish wedding and birthday cakes.  Traditionally it was only ever used for wedding cakes or Christmas cakes (usually a fruit cake) with a layer of marzipan (a dough made from almond meal) underneath. Here you can see the layer of marzipan underneath (yellow colour) and the fondant icing over the top.  If you are interested in a bit more ‘wedding cake’ history here is a great article. Today fondant is extremely popular on both wedding and novelty birthday cakes for it’s perfectly smooth finish.  It is literally a sugar dough which can be kneaded and rolled (much like playdough) and even sculpted into figures.  It’s a very versatile medium that can be made into any colour. What is rolled fondant? Rolled fondant is what I use for my cakes. It is a manufactured product that is literally ‘ready to roll’ when you open the package.  Once out of the packaging, the fondant is kneaded, rolled out with a rolling pin until smooth, placed over the cake, trimmed and smoothed. You can see on this cake the fondant is ready to be trimmed. What is fondant made of? The main ingredients in fondant are sugar and water.   It also usually contains ingredients like gelatin and glycerin to make it soft and pliable. What does fondant taste like? Fondant tastes very sweet – like a soft sweet, chewy...

Birthday Cake Ideas – Adventure Time!

Birthday Cake Ideas – Adventure Time theme! Adventure Time is a quirky, animated kids show created for Cartoon Network. It features main characters Finn (a human boy) and his best friend (and adoptive brother) Jake (who is a dog) and a host of other crazy characters. It’s one of those kids shows I don’t mind watching myself – it’s very funny and a bit different. So I was really excited when asked to come up with some birthday cake ideas inspired by the Adventure Time characters. The customer wanted Jake the dog to be the main cake. To start, I covered the cake board in green fondant icing. Jake was created by hand carving into 3 layers of butter cake, covered with buttercream icing and finished in yellow fondant. Fondant is like an edible playdough. It is made from sugar and can be moulded into almost any shaped. Fondant creates a perfectly smooth surface to work, can be coloured into any shade and is one of the most versatile ingredients to work with and for all of these reasons, is my preferred medium create with. When the cake was covered it kind of looked like an egg or a beehive! Once the base was finished it was time to decorate. I finished Jake’s face and arms and then I started to add some characters. The first is Princess Bubblegum. She is made entirely by fondant and is fully edible: Then the Ice King character was next. He took the longest time to create out of all the characters as his beard and teeth were so fiddly as was the...

Egg Free Chocolate Chip Cookies – a fun recipe to make with kids

Egg Free Chocolate Chip Cookies It’s amazing how many children have food allergies these days, my own included. He has a bit of a weird allergy though – an allergy to raw egg white! He can still eat cooked eggs no problem but he can’t come into contact with raw egg whites (or even the egg shell) or he develops a nasty rash and localized swelling. This makes it so tricky for us to bake together (what kid doesn’t love cracking the eggs into the bowl – right? and licking the bowl?) as the majority of recipes call for eggs. I was so happy when I came across the original recipe from www.bunchofcooks.blogspot.com.au. I have converted the original recipe to grams to make it easier and tweaked it here and there. It’s a basic recipe that kids will enjoy making and it is a good one to have on hand in case you have found yourself with no eggs! And it’s a great item to put on your party menu at your next celebration. Here is a slide show of the recipe: I hope you give them a try because they turned out really delicious – my little boy was so happy he could finally “lick the bowl”. Print the recipe card here: Keep an eye out for more recipes coming...

Photo Cake – Moshi Monsters

Photo Cake –  with Moshi Monsters edible photo image by Robyn Bent Today’s featured (edible) photo cake was for a little girl’s birthday..actually it was a party for twins.  You can see the other cake from this post: Monster High Sheet Cake This sheet cake was finished in creamy buttercream icing coloured green.  The buttercream was piped all over the cake to make it look like grass. I next added an edible image of the Moshi Monsters characters and created a border around the edible image from little hand made fondant flowers and leaves.  The design was finished  with a fondant rainbow in the top corner. It turned out to be a really bright and fun cake. I also created some matching photo cupcakes with the Moshi Monsters name and the birthday girl’s favourite character, Buster. The cupcakes were iced in buttercream with the piped ‘grass’ and topped with a circle of fondant displaying the edible image. At Dreamy Cakes, we can create edible photo cakes in any theme or character.  If your child has a favourite t.v character that they love – we can turn it into a special birthday cake.
